Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between a birth and postpartum doula?

Birth doulas are focused on supporting parents during pregnancy, labor, delivery, and the immediate aftermath. The primary goal is to help them achieve the birth they desire and provide support during these times. Usually, a birth doula visits once or twice after birth to discuss how it went.

Postpartum doulas are focused on the aftermath of birth and helping care for parents and babies. These doulas can perform a variety of household tasks, like baby laundry or meal prep, as well as take care of the baby for short periods. They may also focus on mental health in the postpartum period and helping parents make this transition.

Many doulas are both birth and postpartum doulas, allowing them to offer the full spectrum of support. The two roles are complementary. Bailey and Gail offer both, providing a continuity of care.

  • Will my partner feel replaced by a doula?

Doulas are in no way meant to take on the same role as your partner. Your partner knows you, your comforts, your emotions, and what you need better than anyone and will be a huge part of your birth, recovery and postpartum period. Doulas come with knowledge about pregnancy, birth, and postpartum that your partner may not have and help them find the best way to apply that knowledge to you. We love to work with partners, giving them tips for comfort measures and empowering them to be a part of the journey.

  • Are doulas nurses?

We are NON-medical support for families. Bailey holds a nursing liscence but when wearing her doula hat, she provides no medical support. Doulas a trained in supporting families from a physical, emotional, informational, and advocacy stance. We will not perform blood pressures or do cervical checks. We can however provide resources for a variety of needs.

  • Does insurance cover doula support?

Depends.  You'll need to contact your insurance company to see if they will reimburse you for doula services.  Alternatively, you can submit our invoices to be reimbursed from HSA/FSA or carrot benefits.
